Christmas in Malaga: Free plans not to be missed.

Many travellers decide to visit our Costa del Sol at this time of year, as the climate is very pleasant. To give you an idea, the minimum temperature does not usually drop below 10 degrees Celsius, and it is common to reach 20. Because in addition to the warm weather, our beautiful city is in full swing during the Christmas season; activities, gastronomy, lights, carols… and all this with the joy and good vibes of the south.

What to do this Christmas in Malaga? Well, if original, fun and interesting plans are your thing, whether with children, as a couple, with family or friends, you’re in the right city. Here are some of our best Christmas plans… and they’re free! And they’re free! What more could you ask for?

Larios Street Lighting

New York has its Rockefeller Center, London has its Trafalgar Square and the city has its Calle Larios, Alcazabilla, Alameda, Parque… Malaga has become the true capital of Christmas, with a renewed and expanded Christmas lighting that gets better every year. And all this with the icing on the cake of an exceptional godfather: the Malaga actor Antonio Banderas, who this year inaugurated the lighting of Calle Larios, together with the Mayor of the city.

If you visit Malaga at this time of year, you can’t miss the Christmas forest of lights that Calle Larios has become this year, and its musical shows. The times of the shows are at 18:30, 20:00 and 21:30, every day until the 5th of January.

Enchanted tree of the Alameda Principal

In addition to the new Christmas forest in Calle Larios, the city will stand out this Christmas season for having different points of interest so that visitors always have something different to do. Thus, after the premiere of the lighting and the musical show among leaves, suns and angels, you can enjoy an original Christmas story projected on the top of a hundred-year-old ficus tree in the Alameda Principal.

This light and sound show, which will be repeated three times a day at 19:15, 21:00 and 22:15, tells the story of a little girl who befriends a tree that feels very lonely despite having been in the same place for 200 years. A beautiful show that has been created expressly for the Alameda Principal in Malaga by Fireflyevents

Alcazabilla Christmas Carol

The third focus of attention will move to Alcazabilla Street, and this time it is a story that highlights values such as solidarity, companionship, generosity and gratitude. The story will be projected as a “videomapping” on the wall of the Alcazaba, with daily screenings at 18:30, 20:00 and 21:30.

The Christmas-themed narration will be based on the story of a girl living in the present day, set in Malaga with nods to emblematic places such as the cathedral. Her character highlights values such as solidarity, companionship, generosity and gratitude. It will be a story for the whole family, although it is especially aimed at children.

In addition to the projection, the show will be accompanied by robotic lighting with LED technology, a soundtrack and a narrator who will be the guiding thread of the story. Between shows, images and elements related to Christmas will be projected: stars, garlands, balls and Christmas trees, among others?

Muelle Uno Christmas market

There are numerous Christmas markets all over the city, but the one at Muelle Uno is particularly convenient. Located in a completely pedestrianised area, you can enjoy the numerous stalls where you can buy anything from gifts to Christmas decorations. Every day, from 10 am to 10 pm, until 7 January.

Cathedral Concerts

You can’t visit Malaga at Christmas without visiting the cathedral to enjoy its Christmas concerts, especially the traditional Christmas Carol Recital which will take place on 19 December at 12 noon, this year with the Escolanía de la Fundación Victoria and the Municipal Band.

Also, on 23 December at 20:00 hrs, the Christmas Concert will be held, with works by Pachabel, Lacatelli, Vivaldi, Haendel and Bach, performed by the Youth Baroque Orchestra of Andalusia, conducted by Aarón Zapico.

Christmas Eve will be performed by Giovanni Perruci and Antonio del Pino, who will play the Organ Recital on 24th December, at 23:20 hrs.

Visits to Nativity Scenes “Belenes”

There are numerous nativity scenes to be seen in the city: the one in the cathedral and the one in the Town Hall are just a few examples. But there are many more. If you are interested in this type of artistic display, here you can see all the ones that are worth mentioning.

You will also find the times and days when they are open to the public.

A walk on the beach

If the weather is fine -and it usually is-, a most appetising and atypical plan at this time of year is to take a stroll along any of our beaches. You can opt for a barefoot stroll along the sand or walk along the promenade and take the opportunity to have breakfast on a terrace. Or for a midday snack. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., approximately, the sun is at its highest and we usually get to wear short sleeves when the sun shines, something very un-Christmas-like but incredibly original at this time of year!
