Malaga Spanish Language Film Festival 2020: the film festival will finally be held from 21 to 30 August

The Malaga Spanish Film Festival kicks off its 23rd edition this Friday, 21 August, with the film La boda de Rosa, by Icíar Bollaín.

The first great reunion of Spanish cinema after the confinement will be a decaffeinated edition without the traditional red carpet, which has been replaced by a photocall for the media in the halls of the Gran Hotel Miramar.

Shorter and risk-avoiding

As a result, the 23rd Malaga Spanish Film Festival 2020 will be reduced from ten days to only seven, which means that the number of films to be screened there will be considerably reduced. This will mean that some sections, considered non-essential, will be eliminated in order to strengthen the official competition sections.

For the moment, there is no official confirmation of which films will participate, but it is expected that almost all of those planned for the official section will be shown. Among them are films such as ‘A este lado del mundo’ by David Trueba, ‘El diablo entre las piernas’ by Arturo Ripstein, and ‘Un mundo normal’ by Achero Mañas.

Feature film section

The Official Section of feature films has been reduced from 20 to 16, which means 80% of those programmed in March, corresponding to six different nationalities. In addition to Spain, films from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and the Dominican Republic will be screened. A programme that, although more synthetic, maintains the characteristics and level of the original programme.

The postponement has meant that some titles that were not available in March are now available and can be included in the programme. This is the case of Hasta el cielo, by Daniel Calparsoro; Los europeos, by Víctor García León, and Black Beach, by Esteban Crespo in the Official Selection.

In addition to La boda de Rosa, the Official Selection will also include A este lado del mundo (David Trueba); El inconveniente (Bernabé Rico); Las niñas (Pilar Palomero); Crónica de una tormenta (Mariana Barassi) and Un mundo normal (Achero Mañas) and the Latin American films El diablo entre las piernas (Arturo Ripstein, Mexico); Piola (Luis Alejandro Pérez, Chile); Malpaso (Héctor Valdez, Dominican Republic); El silencio del cazador (Martín Desalvo, Argentina); Summer White (Rodrigo Ruiz Patterson, Mexico); Três Veroes (Sandra Kogut, Brazil-France) and El robo del siglo (Ariel Winograd, Argentina, out of competition).

The jury of the Official Competition Section will be made up of the Uruguayan screenwriter, director and producer based in Spain Álvaro Brechner (president); the Spanish actor Álvaro Cervantes; the Spanish actress Adelfa Calvo; the Spanish screenwriter, playwright and film and theatre director Pablo Remón and the Spanish director, screenwriter and actress Chus Gutiérrez.
