Beaches on the Costa del Sol: the best and what they offer you

Summer is approaching. Malaga is, of course, a tourist destination that works all year round, but its climate and sea invite you to visit it more in summer. In addition to its wonderful urban beaches (four of our flats are by the sea), it is worth visiting the beaches of the Costa del Sol. At least some of them. If you’ve been thinking of taking a trip to another beach while you’re on holiday, take a look at the list we’ve prepared for you. We start in the east and end in the west. We explain where each beach is, why you should visit it and the details that make it unbeatable.

Maro Beach, a quiet cove perfect for snorkelling in Málaga

We begin with Nerja, the easternmost municipality in the province. Before the town centre itself is the cove of Maro, a perfect place for those who want to enjoy a quiet swim away from the noise. In Maro, as well as sunbathing and immersing yourself in its waters, you can dive and see its spectacular waterfall live. It will be unforgettable to snorkel, given the large number of fish and underwater caves. A small beach (500 m), but located in a very well-preserved natural setting and with access for people with reduced mobility. The ideal place for that day when you are looking for peace and quiet. Not for nothing was it voted second best beach in Spain in 2014.

Playa para bucear en Málaga, Cala de Maro

Bonus track: diving, with or without a diving tank, is a real luxury. Fishing has been banned in Maro for years, so there is a real explosion of marine biodiversity that is worth discovering. Next to it you have Cantarriján, a similar cove where nudism is practised.

Burriana Beach, in Nerja

Playa de Burriana Nerja

Burriana is usually one of the most crowded beaches, but it is a pleasure to be there. It is not one of the largest (it is about 800 m long), but its fine white sand is particularly pleasant. Not to mention the numerous beach bars that dot the beach (a common sight along our coastline). In addition to the beach itself, there is the fact that we have the town centre right next to it, and it is worth taking a stroll along the viewpoint and its main streets. Within the beach itself, don’t miss the opportunity, if you like to move around, to rent a kayak for a little trip. You’ll also find areas for games and sports, such as volleyball. And, of course, there is a sun lounger rental area that you won’t be able to resist. There are buses that will take you there in just over an hour, if you don’t want to drive.

Bonus track: book a paella at the Ayo restaurant.

La Calahonda, in Nerja: an icon for Spaniards and foreigners alike.

Playa la Calahonda Nerja

La Calahonda is one of the most famous beaches on the Costa del Sol, and for good reason. Located at the foot of the Balcón de Europa, you have to go early in the morning to find a spot, because it is quite small. But you will fall in love with its warm waters and good atmosphere.

Bonus track: when you get tired of the beach, take the opportunity to visit the Nerja caves.

Benajarafe beach, in Velez-Malaga: ideal for families

The east coast is, in general, much quieter than the west coast. You will discover this if you go to Nerja and, of course, also in Benajarafe. This beach lacks a promenade and you have the road right next to the sand. But don’t worry: it is an urban road, where cars drive very slowly. The advantage is that parking here is relatively easy, as there are numerous streets and areas where you can park. This is a larger beach (over 1.5 km), quite wide and great for a family day out. As along the coast, there are plenty of beach bars. And each one is better than the last. We love El Balandro, because, in addition to the restaurant itself, you can rent sunbeds, umbrellas and even Thai beds – a real luxury!

Bonus track: let the sun go down and watch the sunset. It is particularly beautiful in this area.

Pedregalejo and La Malagueta: the beaches of Malaga city

In the eastern part of Malaga city, the beaches of Pedregalejo and La Malagueta have many advantages: firstly, direct access to the best restaurants and shops, as only a small, quiet promenade separates the sea from the city. Secondly, numerous playgrounds and sports areas. Thirdly, all this makes them perfect for going down to the beach with the family. And finally, its beach bars. Both enjoy great prestige in this respect. Pedregalejo has some of the most iconic: El Caleño or Miguelito el Cariñoso, to name but two.

Playa de Pedregalejo

But Pedregalejo (where our beachfront flats are located) is much more. Numerous restaurants have opened in the area that give a twist to the traditional Mediterranean cuisine. Pez Tomillo, for example, is the perfect place if you want more than just fried fish. Misuto also combines Mediterranean with Japanese: don’t miss it!

Bonus track: go shopping after a shower on the beach – they’re right next door

Bil Bil Beach, in Benalmádena: an Arab touch

As you travel west, you’ll notice that there are more people on the beaches. But you’ll also notice that most of them are equipped with top-quality services. For example, access for people with reduced mobility. Or the perfect organisation of its sun lounger rental service. Bil Bil beach stretches for 400 metres and is very close to the promenade. It is perfect for a delightful stroll around the town when the day at sea is over.

Bonus track: visit the Bil Bil castle, one of the most visited buildings in Benalmádena, with a Moorish air and where nowadays events are held.

Castillo Bill Bill en Benalmádena

El Ejido, in Fuengirola: perfect for pets.

Also known as El Castillo beach because next to it you can see the Sohail castle, a 12th to 14th century building built on Roman ruins. So now you have a reason to visit it besides the sea. El Ejido or El Castillo beach is also perfect for families. As well as parasols and sun loungers for hire, it has access for people with reduced mobility. And another plus: it is a dog-friendly beach. Dogs are welcome, and parking is usually great!
