Día de lluvia en Málaga

Rainy days: 10 plans to enjoy Malaga

In April, a thousand rains, as the saying goes. It is true that spring is one of the most unstable times of the year, and it may happen that, on your visit, you encounter the odd rainy day. Although Malaga’s climate is one of the most pleasant for tourists and it rains an average of 50 days a year, you have to be prepared for any contingency. So, if this is your case, grab an umbrella, mackintosh and boots and take to the streets: we have a dozen great plans for you!

Plan an escape room

Do you know escape rooms? They are those rooms in which, in groups, you are given an enigma and you have one hour to get out of there triumphant. If you already know them, you’re sure to have enjoyed them. And if not, we assure you that they are very addictive! There are several fun ones in Malaga, and almost all of them are in the city centre. Depending on your knowledge of these games, their game masters (the guys who, from a distance, will guide you through the game and give you clues if you ask for them) will suggest one level of difficulty or another. Here is a link to the best escape rooms in the province.

Our favourite? The house of rooms. If you dare with a high level of difficulty, try Changing the story, you’ll love it! You’ll forget about the rain. For sure.

Creative tapas

Going out for tapas is another of Malaga’s great pleasures. If you don’t want to go from one place to another getting wet, we recommend the Mercado de la Merced. In the very centre of the city. In the same space (and sheltered from the soaking wet) you can try all kinds of tapas thanks to the numerous little stalls that line it. From acorn-fed ham to gourmet croquettes and typical dishes of the city. And if you’re keen to try different flavours, you’ll even find places with creative cuisine to test your palate. All this, accompanied by good beers and the best wines. Enjoy!

A visit to the world of Picasso

If you’re out and about in good time, and before heading out for tapas, you can stop by the Picasso Foundation, which is less than 10 steps from the Mercado de la Merced and even the heaviest rain won’t stop you from crossing from one place to the other. The house where the brilliant painter was born always hosts temporary and permanent exhibitions worth enjoying. Right now, and until the end of May, you can see El deseo atrapado (Trapped Desire), a magnificent collection of his own graphic work that delves into the theme of carnal desire. Oh, by the way! You can also visit the space that recreates his house and where the National Geographic series starring Antonio Banderas, Genius: Picasso, was recently filmed.

Theatre for everyone

Another very tempting plan to stay out of the rain is to go and see a play. In Malaga there is a wide variety on offer, ranging from the large-scale productions at the Cervantes to the Echegaray, which also has matinees for children at weekends. If you like micro-theatre, don’t miss the Microteatro Málaga, which has several rooms where you can enjoy small-format shows.

A whole day in the Tabacalera building

The old Tabacalera building houses two incredible museums: the Automobile and Fashion Museum and the Russian Museum Collection. Both are next to each other, and you can plan a whole day in the area. In the first museum you can visit both its space dedicated to the most incredible cars and the collection of vintage fashion by the best couturiers in the world. At midday, you can buy your tickets for the Russian Museum Collection and have lunch inside the museum itself (in a very spacious restaurant with very affordable prices). And, with your stomach full, dive into its exhibitions: the permanent one is dedicated to the art of the former Soviet Union (spectacular). Among the temporary exhibitions, the one dedicated to Russian artists around the world will surprise you.

Do you like alternative art? Visit La Térmica…

It’s a bit far from the centre and you have to take transport, but it’s worth it. In La Térmica there are always workshops, exhibitions and conferences that are worthwhile. If you like alternative spaces, designed for the most avant-garde public and with a multitude of things to do, you have to visit this hotbed of creativity. And if you happen to be there on a Friday, don’t miss their Red Fridays, which are scheduled throughout 2018. Take a closer look at their website and prepare a different day.

… y termina en La Cochera Cabaret

This theatre, which used to be a garage, is one of those places that in a short time have become a point of reference for lovers of different shows. If in the Cervantes or the Echegaray you can go to, let’s say, more classical theatre (although they programme everything), in La Cochera Cabaret you can find a range of different options. From a comedy monologue to a rock concert, as well as exhibitions and courses (which are also available). By the way: there is also space for the little ones with their morning shows. The programme is extremely varied and will not leave you indifferent.

A stroll around the cathedral

Malaga Cathedral is curious to say the least. It began to be built when the Gothic style dominated the scene, and was completed at the end of the 18th century, no less. So, on the one hand, it is unique (or almost unique) in our country, where most cathedrals are in the Gothic style. But what’s more, this cathedral is not finished at all: one of its towers is unfinished. That is why the people of Malaga christened it La Manquita. Inside you can visit its naves, the cathedral choir (the work of Pedro de Mena) and the spectacular choir stalls, as well as several important pieces of art. Next to the cathedral is the Episcopal Palace, another building of great beauty where you can also visit its collection of sacred art.

Remember: you are in the City of Museums

In addition to those already mentioned, Malaga is one of the cities with the largest number of museums. And there is something for everyone. If you come with children, you shouldn’t miss the Interactive Music Museum of Malaga (MIMMA), where the little ones can play instruments, screens and other devices made for their enjoyment. Of course, we mustn’t forget the Centre Pompidou, which has recently changed its entire collection and awaits children and adults with open arms with an always varied, different and spectacular offer. Nor the Carmen Thyssen Museum, which right now has a fascinating exhibition dedicated to the Mediterranean. The Museum of Malaga will delight all those who, in addition to painting and sculpture, want to see its archaeological collection. There is so much to choose from…!

Disconnect from it all in a relaxing hammam

And if you’ve had a hard time walking through our streets the previous days, why not treat yourself to a few hours of relaxation? The hammam next to the Carmen Thyssen Museum has an irresistible offer if you want to relax and forget about the rain. Because in the hammam you are going to get wet, yes, but voluntarily and with pleasure. Believe us.
