Málaga flamenca: the best places to enjoy the “duende” (flamenco spirit)

Yes, of course you can also experience flamenco in Malaga city centre! Our city is associated above all with sun, beach bars and culture (museums, the film festival…). However, flamenco is also part of our popular heritage, and it is easy to find wonderful places where you can enjoy it live.

Tablao and flamenco show in Malaga: Experience the most flamenco Malaga!

Today, from WonderStays, in addition to offering tourist flats in Malaga centre, we want to vindicate the flamenco Malaga. Not only with places where you can see a good live show, but also with places where you can buy souvenirs with a flamenco flavour. In most of them you can’t have dinner, but we recommend you to visit our post about restaurants in Malaga to complete a dream night.

Kelipé: created to bring flamenco closer to everyone

In the surroundings of the Carmen Thyssen Museum, in the heart of Malaga’s old town, stands this flamenco art centre. Founded by a family of artists, it aims to bring flamenco to everyone. And it does so in the best possible way: by programming exceptional performances. Kelipé is committed to the purest and most authentic flamenco: you won’t find a very daring place, but rather an intimate and emotionally charged one. Of course, the quality of the artists is unbeatable. Each show is a recital by five people with extensive experience. You can go from Thursday to Saturday, where there is a single show, at 21:30 hours, lasting 90 minutes. At Flamencotickets you can buy your tickets for 25 euros, including two drinks.

Tablao Los Amayas: direct from Sacromonte to the Liceo de Málaga

This tablao has been in the city for a relatively short time. But they are not newcomers, quite the contrary. This family from Granada comes from one of the most flamenco-loved places in the world: the Sacromonte neighbourhood. There, in their native Granada, they run the tablao Albayzín, and in Málaga they have done nothing but expand their business. In the discotheque Liceo, in Calle Beatas, they have their flamenco space in the centre of Malaga. On the first floor of the aforementioned disco you will find everything you would expect from such a place. The setting is impeccable, with its bulrush chairs and paintings of the greats of this art form hanging on the walls. You can go every day: they have two shows, at 7pm and 9pm, with the exception of the months of January and February, when they are only open from Thursday to Saturday. The show lasts approximately 70 minutes. Price: 25 euros (includes drink). Check their website, because they offer reduced prices for groups.

And there are still many more flamenco tablaos left!

Peña Juan Breva Museum: the most traditional flamenco venue in Malaga

They assure us that their peña is the oldest flamenco club in the world: 60 years of history behind them. The museum or peña Juan Breva is a very peculiar place, which will delight all those who love flamenco. A flamenco tavern at the entrance, a tablao in the basement and, in the middle, a place to go on a pilgrimage if you like the world of flamenco singing. In the Juan Breva museum you can see numerous objects that belonged to flamenco legends from Malaga. And all this in Calle Ramón Franquelo, 4, in the very centre of Málaga.

Peña Juan Breva

What shows does the Peña Juan Breva offer?

On Tuesdays (at 9 p.m.) and Fridays (at 10.30 p.m.), the tablao in the basement comes to life and you can attend master performances. Artists from the city sing and dance. Of course, there is no show on the first Friday of the month. But that’s because the next day there is a “berza flamenca”, which includes a show and a meal. For more information, call 952 221 380.

Taberna Pepe López in Torremolinos: an authentic tablao with a large capacity.

A few kilometres from the capital is Torremolinos. There, flamenco Malaga is adorned with one of the most visited tablaos in the province: the Pepe López tavern. Here, its owners aim to showcase the purest flamenco. And they have been doing so for more than half a century. Almost 200 people can be accommodated in this tablao, decorated in the purest Andalusian style. The chairs are decorated by hand, and each one is personalised with a different flamenco image. This decoration has remained intact since the beginning. Its flamenco troupe is made up of ten artists (four bailaoras, two bailaores, two guitarists and two cantaores). Their performances always start at 10 p.m. (check their timetable), and depending on the season they are scheduled more or less days a week. The price (show and drink) is 30 euros.

Taberna Tablao Flamenco Pepe López Torremolinos

The tablao Pepe López used to be called El Jaleo.

Although the first name of the tavern was El Jaleo, it is still the same. By the way: the greatest of this art have passed through here (from Camarón to Paco de Lucía). And our unforgettable Chiquito de la Calzada also performed there.

Sala Obí Obá: 400 square metres devoted to flamenco

On Calle San Lorenzo, next to the port and in the heart of the Soho district, opens this space where gastronomy and flamenco merge. It is, without doubt, one of the capital’s most innovative ventures. Its owners have installed three spaces dedicated to flamenco in Malaga in no less than 1,000 square metres: a café bar, a restaurant and a tablao. In the first you can enjoy exquisite tapas. In the second, you can enjoy the most exquisite typical dishes of the capital. In the third, the Sala Perchel, you can enjoy great artists every Friday and Saturday (from 8.30pm in spring and summer and with morning and evening shows in autumn and winter). Obí Obá opened its doors only a few months ago, and its strong commitment is giving incredible results.

Flamenco classes in Malaga for tourists at a good price

And that’s not all. The offer of this unique space also includes flamenco classes for foreign tourists. These take place in the morning, where a teacher immerses the participants in the concepts of flamenco, from the basics to the professional.

El Rocío Flamenco Hall: for aspiring dancers and dancers

If, after visiting Malaga, you’ve decided to learn flamenco, don’t forget to visit the Sala Flamenco El Rocío. In addition to your skirt or short dress, you can also take with you everything from a comb to a shawl, including castanets. The offer and the variety of prices is very wide.

Comercial Dos Lunas: with discounts for professionals

Also in the city centre you can find all kinds of flamenco accessories at very good prices. Normally, during the dates close to the Malaga fair is when there is more variety in this type of shops. But at any time of the year you will find an impressive range of products.
